Polish-German Political Dialogue, 1945-1991

Abstract

In the discussion about the development of Czech-German relations, Polish-German relations and the Polish position on fundamental national and state interests are often cited as examples. It must be said that in view of the war experiences and the suffering of millions of people also as a result of direct or indirect war operations, the formation of the Polish concept of German policy was accompanied in all phases of the post-war period by the great interest of the whole society, which was expressed in the form of public discussion as soon as it was possible to the relations between the two nations. Due to the difference in political contacts, the discussion between Poles and Germans from the original FRG more faithfully reflected the true opinions and feelings than with the Germans from the former GDR, despite the officially declared friendship within the socialist bloc. Representatives of governments, public organizations and institutions, especially the Catholic and Evangelical churches, as well as independent representatives of public opinion took part in the discussion on both sides.
